Great product. Feels very solid. The braided cable and hotswappable switches are a nice touch. It feels very intuitive to use and has enough keys to give you the flexibility of WASD or joystick movement. The software isn’t the most flexible but it gets the job done. One of my favorite features is the RBG lighting, but not for cosmetic reasons. The software lets you set individual colors to each key so it’s INCREDIBLY useful for remembering your keybinds. For example, you can set all your menu buttons to have one color, any movement buttons to another color, etc. There are also notches on the middle three buttons so it’s always easy for you to find your “home row” without looking. Having the two buttons on the bottom left be 2x size also helps contextualize the keypad in terms of a regular keyboard layout that most people are used to.
I do have some small gripes with it (software could be more flexible, a Hall Effect thumbstick would be cool, having some adjustability may help people with smaller hands), but they are too minor for me to deduct any points.
It’s very clear from using the SideQuest that a lot of careful thought and consideration went into its design. The key notches, lighting, key sizes, and curvature all feel deliberate and intuitive.
To call out the obvious comparisons that I also have experience with: The $20 keypads on Amazon are probably all crap (the one I used started disconnecting randomly after 5 months of light use). The Razer Tartarus is incredibly uncomfortable, the joystick feels awful, and it forces you to use Razer’s bloated software. Azeron keypads are cool if you want to spend a lot of time tinkering with them but suffer from giving users too much choice. The SideQuest works right out of the box and lets you get back to your gaming, which is the whole reason you’re in the market for a keypad like this.
